Chapter 7

Zintun, now the prime minister of Chinhut was known as the ruthless expansionist among the 1% club as well as the 99% club. They also recognized him as cruelty personified. So they were in his awe during most of their waking hours. Zintun’s childhood was the reason for him to become what he became. Till he entered his adulthood, he lived in a small town in one of its shanties. He was always looked down upon and shunned by the kids and elders of the adjoining prosperous neighborhood. Zintun hated being confined to his 8 by 10 square feet house.

“I want the whole world for myself. I feel suffocated here,” he used to cry out alone. His mind was constantly busy contemplating to achieve this singular ambition. Though he never went to any school, he learnt to read with his own efforts. Soon he became voracious reader. His favorite topics included how to become rich, powerful, and famous. As he neared his adolescence, clarity suddenly dawned on him. It was his ‘eureka’ moment. He cried out in excitement, “Politics!! Only politics can make me rich, powerful, and famous quite easily and with certainty.” So he decided to seriously pursue politics as his long-term career.

Soon he started training himself and developed a strong physique. He started hooliganism. He became extortionist. He recruited vagabond boys of the nearby shanties. The boys were allotted the territories where they would extract money from the citizens as protection money. He controlled the gangs ruthlessly. He threw money at the boys whenever they accomplished some tasks for him. He was very cruel to those who did not obey him. Sometimes he would kill a small offender just to make an example of him.

Also if citizens denied paying the protection money he would see to it that the entire family was wiped out somehow or other. People were so terrorized that no one dared to give evidence against him. Everyone was very scared of him. He soon became an undisputed leader.

“Now let us go to the shanties of other towns and get more followership. This country has too many poor people and we must look after them,” he instructed the boys.

Boys were in his awe and obeyed him truthfully. They used to exchange their sentiments with each other, “Big boss has ordered. Better obey him or else be prepared to loose one of your limbs or die.”

The rich neighborhood also conceded to him after he forcefully occupied a huge bungalow. The bungalow was forlorn because its solitary owner had died with no one to claim it after his death.

“From now on this bungalow is going to be my home,” Zintun promulgated. No one had the guts to defy him.

Zintun achieved his first milestone.

A new idea entered his mind one day while he was absorbed reading a book in geography.

“This seems to be a beautiful island and very close to Chinhut. I like its 175 square miles area surrounded by the blue seawaters and the green plantations. I want it. The tribal families living there seem to be simple people devoid of any knowledge about the rest of the world. They do not have any modern weapons and conquering them will be an easy bet.” He toyed with the idea of owning the island.

By now he had great many followers far and wide in his country. He used some of his loyal followers to form his own personal army. He bought the latest weapons for his personal army.

He spoke with chief of his personal army showing a picture of the island, “From a week from now invade this island. Capturing the island will be a walkover. Just about 200 odd men with their families inhabit the island. Those who oppose don’t deserve our mercy. Finish them. We will use the survivors as workers in our various projects there. You guys will be rewarded sumptuously as always. Now don’t show me your face without conquering the island.”

“Yes sir. As you wish.” The chief had no option.

Zintun arranged a live worldwide telecast of the victorious celebrations a week later. The breaking news flashed on millions of TV screens in all the countries of Berth. It said:

“Zintun, the most revered politician of the developing country Chinhut has acquired an island admeasuring 175 square miles located in the sea north-west of the country. Though it is his personal property he has generously dedicated it to the people of his country. He plans to have several projects there. This will generate significant revenue and employment opportunities to several thousand citizens of Chinhut.”

By now Zintun was already an important office bearer of the ruling party. With this news he became a hero and the most popular politician of Chinhut. He took over country’s prime minister’s office soon after the present incumbent was forced to resign to make room for Zintun. The rapid succession of milestones he achieved and his meteoric rise baffled all the bigwigs of Berth. Even the more powerful nations and their top shots started cultivating their camaraderie with Zintun and his country. However, the expansionist mentality of Zintun was the one not to be satiated. He was made of entirely different clay.

His recent meeting with Desh’s prime minister Lobhilal proposing the new acquisition of the border state of Desh was a step forward to his next milestone. However, his principal condition to acquire this big chunk of land was by fighting a war against Desh. He was not used to getting things on platter. He was not used to receive freebies; he was in the habit of snatching others’ things by force.
